Frank Lloyd Wright's Fireplaces (Wright at a Glance) by Carla Lind Wright was known to have said simply: "Roofs leak". He might also have said, "Fireplaces smoke" since many of his did. The problem was Wright got the shape of the throat (often in the form of a hood) wrong. Otherwise his fireplaces were sometimes in corners with widely flared fireboxes shaped like Rumfords. Others were large or high, with sweeping arches or looking as if they were carved from a natural stone cliff. Lind's book is a nice collection of pictures of Wright's fireplaces. They were always interesting. And so far, based on the few we've worked on, we can improve the way they work with a little "Rumfordization". - Jim Buckley |
