ANSI Z21.60/CSA 2.26
Decorative Gas Appliances for Installation in Solid-fuel Fireplaces.

This standard applies to gas log sets installed in working masonry and listed factory- built fireplaces and vented through their chimneys.

  • An automatic gas ignition cutoff system (known also as a flame safeguard or safety pilot system) must be provided.*
Some U.S. jurisdictions recognize ANSI Z21.84 Manually Lighted, Natural Gas Decorative Gas Appliances for Installation in Solid-Fuel Burning Appliances, a non-harmonized standard for natural gas burning log sets that do not have automatic ignition systems.
  • The appliance can only be installed in a solid-fuel burning fireplace with a working flue, constructed of non-combustible materials.
  • There must be a permanent free opening of a minimum area specified by the appliance manufacturer.
  • The chimney damper must be fixed in a manner that maintains the minimum permanent vent opening.
  • The operating instructions must include directions that a fireplace screen must be in place during operation. (In some jurisdictions glass doors are required, but they must be open during operation.)
  • Automatic thermostats cannot be used to control appliances listed under this standard.

Note: some gas log sets have dual listings as vented decorative appliances for installation in solid fuel fireplaces (ANSI Z21.60) and unvented room heaters (ANSI Z21.11.2). These log sets are equipped with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS), see 1.3.2.
