One other idea I have is to place a chiminea inside the fireplace on a lazy susan so the opening is facing the great room, but when it's time to go to bed, use a poker to turn the chiminea around to face the bdrm. That way, assuming the flue will handle the discharge from the chiminea, which it should if it's 11 or 12" in dia, there will only be one opening and a rather small one at that.
