My friend, Vern, had a "crummy old modern fireplace" and wanted it Rumfordized. We tried to keep it simple and worked through the existing 3' high by 4' wide opening. We used a segmented throat system which was a lot more work to hoist up through the existing opening than I thought it would be. Anyway it seemed to turn out okay.
