Our parents, Al and Myrtelle Buckley, lived in Java for about eight years from 1933 until 1941. Dad went over to help build a new plant for Goodyear. Mom went out alone and they got married in Singapore. They took lots of 8mm movies which are up to almost 80 years old by now. Recently, thanks to advice from Carlos and Renee, I have had about half the old movies - about six hours worth - digitized or transcribed into digital format. Al and Myrtelle came back to the States on Homeleave in 1938, back to Java, back to Ohio, then to Brazil and back again - so far.

Sometimes plans changed at the last minute. Mead and Bateson intended to marry in Java on their way to Bali to do fieldwork, but the Dutch government would not allow it. Instead they flew to Singapore and were married, then returned to Java and went on to Bali.
