Issues under Trump, 2024

With the possibility of federal deputization and the involvement of the Army in rounding up immigrants we should be ready. And being as ready as we can be I think involves knowing our rights, constant communication with the police and sheriff and learning how to use WhatsApp effectively. Maybe all that we dan do is document abuse and tell stories - but we should at least do that. AOC advice -

There are certainly immediate steps that people at home can be taking. It's really important that the people around you — whether it's someone at your church, whether it's a family person — have your information, and that there is a plan in case you are apprehended. If your child is documented or your child is a citizen, it's very important to have what documents you have prepared and ready.

I come from a district that was very heavily affected by ICE raids during the last Trump presidency.

If you have a Member of Congress like myself or any other that's known for championing immigrants rights — open a case with them. I am able to open cases for my constituents, and sometimes you need to sign a pre-release form so that members of congress can act on your family's behalf.

And so, sometimes I will advise my constituents to open a case with me so that we are authorized to do whatever we can.

Solidarity Rally at NW Detention Center

For the second week in a row, immigrants detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma are on hunger strike.

They have asked for organizations to pick a day to come out to the Detention Center in solidarity.

Will you join us at the WA Fair Trade Solidarity Day, FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 10AM-Noon, as we stand with detainees at the NW Detention Center? Let me know!

NORTHWEST DETENTION CENTER
START SECOND WEEK OF HUNGER STRIKE

WA Fair Trade Solidarity Day
at the NW Detention Center
Friday, April 21, 10AM-Noon
1623 E J Street, Port of Tacoma

The people inside the detention center are standing up for basic dignity. On Friday we will gather outside to stand with them. Help us show GEO and ICE that the people inside are not invisible!

Can't join us Friday? There is also an encampment 24/7 outside the Detention Center for as long as the hunger strike continues - swing by or check NWDC Resistance on Facebook for their current supply needs!

The hunger strike inside the Northwest Detention Center (Tacoma's Immigration Prison) has grown to over 400 people since the first organizers refused their lunch Monday - April 10 - at noon. The hunger striker's demands include expedited hearings, increased pay for work (they are currently paid $1 per day!), improved medical care, and better food.

NWDC Resistance (which formed after the 2014 hunger strike) will be camped outside the detention center in solidarity until at least Wednesday morning.

Rally Tonight (4/11) at 6pm outside detention center (1623 E J St., Tacoma).

Show your support by joining the encampment at 1623 E J St., Tacoma, WA any time day or night until Wednesday morning. Canopies and tents are set up with plenty of room. Please bring a sleeping bag and warm clothing if you are spending the night. Our presence is vital as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and GEO (private for profit prison company) are likely to retaliate against the hunger strikers and they need to know we are watching.

Right now it seems as if the hunger strike is to last 3 days. If any of us can go over there on Wed morning, that would be great. Self organize a carpool with this spreadsheet although I think JCIRA members can do it locally. I've included all email addresses so that you can contact each other.
