Star

Steve Chapin is now working on the boat - subbing it out mostly. We went to see an even older Star built in 1924 (lower picture). I have more pictures of the surprisingly heavy rigging, etc.

So, I guess it's time to decide on colors - I'm thinking of cream and turquios - sort of like the Schooner Martha. Couldn't get much help by looking at pictures of the older boats in the Budd Inlet Black Star Fleet. Did remind me to look for a hull number.

Here's an article by Bill Brosius on Building a Star Fleet with Old Boats in Olympia with a picture of an older dark blue wooden Star.*

Bill Brosius convinced me to rig the boat with an aluminum mast and boom, circular vang and glass bottom with bottom paint.

After crewing in the Black Star Regatta, I was convinced. I'm not sure my boat was ever raced. The tension on the slim mast would almost certainly break it and the lines and controls needed to be moved and updated.

All the boats are different and it is not so much a matter of restoration as not being safe and functional. The glass bottom will keep the hull from separating (lots of Stars on the bottom) and bottom paint will allow me to keep the boat in the water seasonally.

I decided to keep and race the boat in Olympia - with maybe some visits to Port Townsend.
