The landscape in the karakoram is very unforgiving and extremely poor. We were designing prototype village schools and had to count every penny in the process. The idea of a firepalce had to be dropped becasue of several reasons - too expensive to dress stone, not enough space in the rooms to get a safe distance from the fireplace and last but not least, cost of firewood. That whole exercise in my opinion remains unresolved. Good to hear from you.
