Use a crane with a cast iron pot for an authentic colonial look and an alternative way to cook. The crane shown here is made to order and hand forged, just as it was made in Colonial America. Traditional pintles or screw pintles are included. Specify which. Regular pintles are installed during the brick work but, if your fireplace is already built, the crane can be mounted using screw pintles. Classic Early American "S" hooks and trammels would have also been hand forged the village blacksmith. They are used to lower and raise the cooking pot over the fire. "S" hooks are 3", 5" and 8". The pintles are 18 inches apart in the short position. How big should the crane be? Generally a little more than one half the width of the fireplace opening. Example One.
