Gas Logs

Dec 2, 2013

Hello!

About ten years ago, I purchased a Rumford gas log set from you (TNA-24 37,000BTU/hr, LP). First, let me say how happy we are with it! It works amazingly well and everyone thinks it's a "real" fire.

We are in the process of switching our home fuel source from LP to natural gas. ....

Thank you for your time and a great product!

Matt

Our club has a Rumford fireplace installed with the full Tipi [gas log set] and it is really quite amazing, everyone thinks it is a real log fire because of the unusual setup of the logs, the fireplace itself is also really beautiful. (it's probably 60" ??)

What size would best suite our fireplace? Is buying direct from your internet the best method, or is there a local distributor? We are located in Daniel Island (Charleston) South Carolina.

Thanks for your help.

Constance,
Both the andirons and the gas logs arrived before New Year's Eve, thank you. We have yet to install the items because our new den (with the Rumford fireplace) is not completed. I will let you know when they are finally in place.
Hope your holidays were nice. Happy New Year.

Dampers

On Nov 28, 2015 Sharon Howell wrote:

We recently had a Rumford built in our log home and my question is this ...when building a fire in the Rumford do you open the damper all the way...or do you just open it partially.....we tried building a fire with the damper opened to the first opening...it was okay but when we opened it all the way it burned much better...but I am wondering what are the other two opening settings on the damper for and when do you use them???? Thanking you in advance,

S Howell

    Sharon,

All the way. The masonry throat of our Rumfords are tuned to be the correct size for maximum performance and the damper is only used to close off the flue system when the fireplace is not in use. Interestingly the "correct" throat opening turns out to be about 5% of the fireplace opening area - whether there is a big fire or a small fire. A big fire produces more smoke and air but it has more power to drive the smoke and air through the throat while a small fire produces less smoke and air but has less power.

So why do we provide dampers with multiple latches? Good question. Probably to account for different locations of the bracket. If the latching bracket is set a little too high the damper may be fully open when it’s in the second or third latch. Another possibility is that a Rumford that is built with a lower opening or one with everything going for it - smooth internal passages, tall interior chimney, etc. - may draw fine if the damper is very slightly closed - maybe only 80 or 90% open - and the multiple latches can allow some adjustment and experimentation. Finally the damper designer may not have completely bought into the notion that the damper should be fully open when the fireplace is in use and closed when the fireplace is not in use.

    Best,
    Jim

Any homemade soup would probably be good. The fire adds a nice flavor. Here are a couple of good ones. The lentil is from Moosewood, a wonderful vegetarian restaurant in Ithaca, NY; the curry soup is from an old (many moons ago!) Gourmet magazine.

Enjoy!

3TBLSP OLIVE OIL
1 C CHOPPED ONIONS
