Stacked Rumfords are are common. Or at least they were in the 18th century when people heated with fireplaces. Every room had a fireplace. Smoke chambers and flues from lower level fireplaces were sloped to pass to one side and behind fireplaces above. Typically only top floor flues were straight and plumb.
